Opening Reception: THURSDAY, June 10, 7-9PM
Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery

Alex Dodge's third solo show with the gallery extends the artist's interest in the relationships between humanity, technology, art, and design by presenting a collection of concept prototypes developed in collaboration with Brooklyn-based tech start up Generative.
Each of these works address the notion of passive interfacing; engaging the human body through acquiescent means. While some works appear inspired by science fiction, such as his Sleep Talker dream
interface, which intends to allow users communication with others while sleeping, other works are perhaps more accessibly clear-cut, like Dodge's shoes that generate electricity with each walking step.
Generative began as a conceptual project founded in 2009 by Dodge along with Akira Shibata, a particle physicist known for his work on the Atlas project at the Large Hadron Collider, and Yohei Ishii, who has worked extensively in the video game industry. The three founded Generative as an independent research and development lab focused on mobile technology and visualization.
Alex Dodge received a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. His work is included in numerous public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Art Boston, and the New York Public Library. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Croft, Michel Demanche, Jordan Eagles, Cui Fei, Young Kim, Norman Mooney and Zane York. The public reception at the gallery's 92 Wythe Ave location will take place on Friday July 16th from 6- 9 pm. The public is invited to attend this event and visit the gallery during regular hours, Wed - Sat 11 am - 7 pm, Sun 12 - 6 pm and Mon 9 am to 5 pm.
Coincidental Opposites comes from the latin phrase "coincidentia oppositorum" and is a term used to describe the polarities or yin and yang of the universe. Latin is not however the first language in which these terms were coined but rather in archaic Chinese when the 6th century B.C. philosopher, Lao Tze began to suggest that "there can be no love without hate, no light without dark, no male without female." The eight artists within the exhibition explore either obliquely through references or directly with their materials/symbols the coincidental opposites of beauty and the grotesque, permanence and impermanence, attraction and repulsion, solid and non solid, soft and hard, yielding and lethal as well as full and empty. Within their art, each of the eight artists utilize the coincidental opposites to help them approach the sublime, react to events in the world around them and or give birth to new ideas or thought processes.

WORK Gallery presents:

PATRICK J. CAMPBELL
OBJECTS & OUTPOSTS
Opening Reception Saturday, June 5, 6-9pm
Campbell’s paintings depict miniaturized landscapes, containing Shaker inspired buildings and associated infrastructure, as well as natural elements such as rock forms, trees, and bodies of water. The commonplace elements are arranged into fanciful village scenes, reflecting the real world, while also defying it within the paintings’ own internal logic. Campbell employs trompe l’oeil to depict the scenes as contained in illusionistic shadow boxes, and uses deep framing to further create a sense of real depth.
Campbell’s worlds are miniaturized, contained, and abstracted, encouraging viewers to project their own interpretations. The paintings invite participation, as they suggest dioramas that one could physically manipulate as well as the transformation of manmade or natural objects through imagination and vision into narrative scenes of personal meaning.

Tim Lokiec
April 30 – June 6, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, April 30, 7-9PM
Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is showing a new exhibition of paintings by Tim Lokiec. The show runs from April 30 through June 6, 2010. There is a reception for the artist on Friday, March 26th from 7-9 PM.
"Tim Lokiec's new body of work employs a faux aesthetic of painterly ease; emphasis is placed on the formal concerns of composition, geometry, and psilocybin design principles. In these oil paintings, Lokiec creates an evocative surface with foggy passages that satisfy a playful simplicity. His imagery draws upon dance music references, the internet, and the collective drawing zine he publishes with friends. His use of projection and repetitive re-painting, as well as a tendency towards abstraction, articulate his attempts at a kind of painterly thoughtlessness."

LOVE BILLY SOLO SHOW OPENS MARCH 13, 6-9PM
WORK Gallery is pleased to present LOVE BILLY, the first New York gallery show of Brooklyn based street muralist and graffiti artist, Love Billy. Please join the artist for an opening reception on Saturday, March 13 from 6-9pm.
Love Billy has developed a distinctive and immediately recognizable style of street art over the past decade, making his work a ubiquitious presence on the streets of Williamsburg, Bushwick, Red Hook and throughout Brooklyn. His figurative work features an array of highly stylized hybrid creatures set against a colorful, textured background. Typically found on deteriorating buildings and vacant lots, Love Billy's creations characteristically reveal a subtle expression of ennui, iterating a wry self-awareness of their surrounding environment.
Transforming the WORK Gallery exhibition space, the LOVE BILLY installation will feature several of the artist's oil and spraypaint works on canvas, wood panel, aluminum, and various other found materials. For more information, please contact Walker Waugh: (646) 460-5425, or theworkgallery@redtinshack.com.

Parallel Modes, new works by Katsuhisa Sakai will be at Janet Kurnatowski from February 26 – March 28, 2010. This will be Sakai’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
Throughout the 1980's and 1990's, Sakai's geometric based wood constructions articulated objects that were structured as a continuous embodiment of space and meaning. In this show, Sakai attempts to expose the correlation between four black and white paintings and four wooden wall sculptures. Even though the two bodies of work are created in different media they are executed in a parallel mode, both dealing with the concept of space and dimensionality.
Visit Janet Kurnatowski for more information.

Nora Herting: Free Sitting
Armory Celebration Party
March 6th, 2010
Like the Spice is pleased and excited to present Nora Herting:Free Sitting, as part of their Armory Celebration Party.
Her work, previously shown at Like the Spice in 2008's Flip, allows us to look at the strange world built on the family portraits: those held-too-long smiles, the world which only exists in the brief moment we say "cheese". On March 6th, Nora follows this idea in a new project, transforming the portrait studio into an architectural space, and turning the act of making the portrait into a social sculpture. This time she will pose and photograph bystanders who become performers by being cast in new, fictive families for her lens. Their imaginary relationships will be immortalized in these family portraits, as they also become participants in the performance.

Friday, March 12th, 6:30pm - 10:00pm
Monthly Dinner Series: The Worlds We Ate
Saturday March 20th 8:00pm - 10pm
RSVP Required - Click Here To RSVP!
The World We Live In, The Worlds We Create is a sculptural experience and group exhibition curated by Marisa Sage and featuring the work of Langdon Graves, Patrick Jacobs, Matthew Northridge, Diana Puntar, R. Justin Stewart, and Jessica Stoller.
It can be argued that any work of art, from modest scale to gargantuan sprawl, is employed by the action and participation of the viewer. But perhaps more than any other discipline, sculpture arrests the viewers full attention. By creating a new world with new borders and conditions, each sculpture in this group exhibition embraces both the viewer and the object, using the relationship between the two to recreate the definitions of reality, invention, and representation.
Join Like the Spice for a fantastic dinner, including the artists from The World We Live In, The Worlds We Create.

01/17: Eternal Return

ETERNAL RETURN
curated by Christine Spangler and Tyler Campbell Wriston
Opens January 22, 2010
Press Preview from 6 to 7pm
Reception from 7 to 9pm
NURTUREart Non-Profit, Inc. is pleased to present Eternal Return, a group exhibition curated by Christine Spangler and Tyler Wriston in our gallery at 910 Grand Street in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The exhibition features Jonathan Brilliant, Cody Trepte, Thomas Lendvai, Reuben Lorch-Miller, Judith Braun, Joy Curtis and Tara Parsons.
Calling upon Friedrich Nietzsche's theory of 'eternal return' for inspiration, the curators write "By applying Nietzsche's existential definition of a continuous return to every passing moment - thereby making those very moments palpable, intransient and solidified - one can transform an otherwise abstract notion into something paramount and hugely consequential."
Eternal Return brings together seven artists who fashion repetitive, accumulative, or cyclical forms from simple materials, resulting in works that are quiet yet psychologically charged. This interdisciplinary exhibit will include three site-specific installations made just for NURTUREart.

Jenny Morgan: New Territory - Book Signing Party featuring a performance by Nicki Stager, Tom Firehat, James Weiss, and Ryan Bair January 8th, 2010, 6:30pm - 9pm
Jenny Morgan: New Territory, published through Plus Gallery, is a collection of Jenny's paintings, photos, writings and even some interviews. This is likely a "one-show goodbye" situation as Firehat was overheard saying (of Stager): "That wench doesn't even have a camera"; and when pressed, Bair called Stager a "pretender to the throne." It's just one show, and then goodbye. Don't miss out on this art-filled evening. It all starts at 6:30pm!

In the debut New York solo show of international sensation Larissa Sansour, " A Space Exodus," gives viewers a powerful alternative to the way Palestinians are portrayed in the media. Visitors will encounter her video "A Space Exodus" —in which we see her landing on the moon—along with five large photographs of the event and a hundred toy-like Palestinaut sculptures. "A Space Exodus" is as charmingly mischievous as it is delightful and magical.
"A Space Exodus," several years in the making, is beautifully shot and wonderfully choreographed, with state-of-the-art special effects.
On January 23rd , Larissa Sansour is doing a book signing event for "Nonel and Vovel," her graphic novel made in collaboration with Oreet Ashery, at the Brooklyn Museum of Art's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
05/05: Frank Zadlo @ OHGE Ltd.
OPENING THURSDAY, MAY 7th 6-9 pm....... in Seattle, however we wanted to go ahead and get the word out anyway. Frank Zadlo's work was in the Brooklyn Art Alternative exhibition of Terminal Signal.

Zadlo's debut solo show at OHGE Ltd. will present videos, works on paper and digital photographs from the past two years which explore the impact of constantly evolving (and obsolete) technology as it relates to film and video.
The title of the show is a quote taken from the 1985 film, Back To The Future, where the character of Doc responds to the Marty character's continual use of the word "heavy" to define situations he finds himself in. Doc does not recognize the expressiveness Marty means to imply by using the word, and takes what he says at face value. The literal stance of this interaction is contrary to what we, as an audience, expect; we understand Marty's use of "heavy" as contemporary slang, but Doc does not. Our expectations are disrupted - we are left disorientated, much like Marty who finds himself in a time not his own - and the result is a humorous scene. We laugh because we don't know what else to do. In the face of the anxiety of miscommunication, of disorientation, we laugh.

The opening reception for the artists will be from 7 - 9 pm on Friday, March 27, 2009.
This show takes a focused look at four paintings, each one emblematic of a practice whose commitment to the medium has been a specific force in the development of an individual oeuvre. What the works have in common is the creation of an aesthetic reality based on the processes of cognition where notions of literality are inverted, and used as symbolic referents. Whether objectified or implied, aleatoric or given, rational or irrational, the referent in each work operates as a portal through which the experience of thought leads to insight. Meaning is shifted away from the referent, and painting is neither defined by nor limited to the cultural phenomena that gave it body. For more information or images please contact the gallery.
